When self-destruction replaces self-care.
Let’s explore why we do this subconsciously and how to change the story.
I hear this often, and I understand it... because I do it myself. When busy days come, everything good in our diets seems to fly out the window. This behaviour stems from feeling overwhelmed and being unable to think beyond the next thing that will help us feel safe and secure... or even the next deadline or place we need to be.
We tell ourselves we're 'too busy’, but what we should actually be telling ourselves is "you're never too busy to neglect your body". Sound dramatic? Well, it shouldn't. Not giving your body what it needs to perform at its best when it needs it the most, can very much look, and feel, like self-neglect.
We don’t do this on purpose. If we did, most of us would notice the pattern right away and stop it. But we don’t.
One bite turns into one meal. One meal leads to one day. One day turns into a week, and suddenly you find yourself in a rut without even knowing how you got there.
This is how we end up bloated, uncomfortable, and feeling bad after a few days of chaos. Life gets so busy that we stop caring about what our bodies really need to perform at their best.
The more we understand that this is how we’re wired, the easier it is to recognize these patterns when they start. That awareness, that moment of recognition, is the first step.
Awareness gives you choice. When you know that stress and life are about to overwhelm you for a few days, you can prepare. Mentally. Physically. This means planning your meals and giving your body what it needs before it starts craving a quick fix.
When you do this, you avoid all the messy chaos in the middle. You prevent the crash, the guilt, and the burnout.
This is where true self-care begins—not with perfection, but with awareness that acknowledges your current situation.
