Restriction doesn’t work, I say it over and over again... it's my personal experience both psychologically and biologically - because it punishes the messenger instead of listening to the message.
Just the mental belief that certain foods are “bad”... and you can NEVER have them again, your nervous system reads that as a threat. A potential famine. A shutdown of pleasure and safety.
So, your body responds exactly as it’s designed to:
Hunger hormones spike.
Food thoughts intensify.
You start craving quick energy (sugar, carbs).
You feel out of control.
The survival brain, the limbic system, overrides the rational brain in moments of perceived scarcity. It doesn’t care that you “shouldn’t” want the harmful snacks, it just knows something’s off and it’s trying to restore balance. Fast.
Add emotional stress to the mix and now you’re not just dealing with biology, but also a nervous system screaming for relief. Cravings for sweet, salty, or fatty foods become ways to self-soothe, to feel momentarily safe.
So, when people try to restrict their way to health, they’re fighting biology with shame. And shame only reinforces the cycle because now it’s not just “I want the cookie” it’s “I’m weak for wanting it.”
That inner war? It’s exhausting. And it doesn’t work long term.
Restriction might create short-term CONTROL, but it always leads to rebound.
So, what's the backup plan???
The alternative? Curiosity. Understanding. Regulation. Giving your body what it’s actually asking for... whether that’s fuel, protein, pleasure, rest, or emotional support.
That’s why this work is about decoding impulses, not silencing them.
