When chocolate isn't about chocolate

When food becomes the only thing that feels…

Last week, a new study finally backed up what I've known (probably what we've all really known)

Boredom, not hunger, not indulgence... is one of the biggest reasons we reach for comfort food and I’m not talking about “I’ve got nothing to do” boredom.

The low hum kind where your mind is overstimulated, but your heart feels flat.

You're not quite tired, not quite awake... just hovering. So, you eat.

Because food gives you something when everything else feels like... nothing. So, while science says HEY IT'S BOREDOM! I might still be leaning on nervous system regulation that's out of wack... because, what's missing? What needs are still unmet?

That 9PM snack raid? The chips. The cake. The spoon in the peanut butter jar? The ice cream after dinner? Yes, we can think it's about taste, but what if it's about sensation? The wanting to feel alive when the day’s left you numb.

And here’s the part most wellness advice skips over:

It’s okay if food became your spark. IT'S OK! But own it! Recognize it! And be accountable! That craving is communication.

Studies show that people who felt flat, bored, or emotionally blunted were way more likely to reach for hyper-palatable foods. Discipline runs out very fast when you need something to cut through the nothingness.

Your body doesn’t always know the difference between stress and boredom; both switch on the same survival loop. Your brain just wants dopamine. And food brings it. Fast.

So, here's a reframe that will help... See it as a whisper from your nervous system

“Hey. I’m empty. I’m restless. I’m tired of being strong. I need something! Softness, movement, music, stillness, care. And I don’t know how to ask… so I’m asking through snacks.”

This is why I don’t preach restrictions. Why I’ll never say, “just distract yourself.”

Instead, I teach rhythm. Bridge snacks. Nervous system safety. And above all, compassion.

So next time that craving hits, try this:

Close your eyes. Go inside your mind... create a stillness that feels like home, breathe deeply and ask:

“What am I needing that food is trying to give me right now?”

If the answer is still food, then eat, you absolutely need to be nourished. But let it be conscious. Let it be kind and let it be NOURISHMENT, not self-destruction.

Curiosity is the doorway to real change. Get curious about yourself.
